4/16 Spent the day birding, starting with a couple hours at UConn
(9:15-11:00) observing the BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS (life bird for me) across the
street to the north from the North Garage. 9 was the highest count at one
time with lots of Cedars. Great to be able to compare them side by side and
listen to their calls.
Then drove Horsehill Barn Rd. and observed 3 AMERICAN KESTRELS, bluebirds,
chipping sparrows, tree swallows, and mockingbirds.
A stop at Station 43, Vibert Rd. produced Swamp Sparrows and heard what I
think was a Virginia Rail.
Newbury Rd which was under water had a Wood duck pair, Pied-billed Grebe and
a beaver.
At home in Somers yard, 3 male PURPLE FINCH continue. Phoebe's checking out
the barn for nesting.
1 AMERICAN KESTREL continues guarding the nest box on 9th District.
