BirdNote incorporates the rich sounds of birds with stories that illustrate their interesting and sometimes truly amazing abilities. Each show is timely and relevant. Those that feature local species are scheduled to coincide with the season.
"There is no other radio program quite like BirdNote," says Chris Peterson, founder and executive producer of BirdNote. "Listeners want this kind of environmental coverage. They feel renewed by the sounds, educated by the content, and surprised by the variety of BirdNote."
BirdNote first aired in western Washington in February 2005. Today, BirdNote is heard by some 150,000 listeners from Alaska to Texas - and now on WNPR in Connecticut. Another several thousand listen by podcast and on-line. BirdNote is for anyone who has two minutes a day to tune in to the natural world.
Of the four USA flyways - the major aerial pathways used by birds as they migrate north and south - WNPR is the first major station in the eastern flyway to pick up the show.
"A big thanks to WNPR for taking the lead on the east coast," says Peterson. "What a treat to air the show in an area that values birds and conservation and public radio! We hope in time, that people take notice of birds and begin to feel connected to the environmental issues they represent. With BirdNote we're building awareness of conservation and conservation organizations like Audubon."
