For a few years I followed the stories at www.owlcam.com, which gave
a very detailed account of nesting Barred Owls. From what I remember
the daytime calling means that papa is having to hunt during the day
to try to provide the food that mama and the growing kids need, which
seemed to be a pretty common situation.

Even though the birds are no longer nesting at www.owlcam.com all the
stories are still there. I highly recommend starting at the
beginning and following the day by day accounts. Fascinating and
educational.
