Did a bit of birding in the Steep Rock section of the Steep Rock Preserve here in Washington, CT this AM (April 22). A bit slow but of course with my decline in hearing ability I may have missed a few wood warblers. I used to pride my self as a good "ear" birder. This section of the Steep Rock Preserve is southeast of Washington Depot on the Shepaug River. I had four Louisiana waterthrush on territory on the river (One of the reasons why the Steep Rock Preserve should be an CT Important Bird Area). Amazing how the waterthrush are on the same territory every year. Had great looks at a winter wren at it's regular spot before I heard it's lovely song. While now an incredibly "common" breeding bird here in this part of CT, I also had eight yellow-bellied sapsuckers. Good looks at two set of breeding pairs of sapsuckers. Everyone have a good Earth Day today. Now not everyone jump into SUV's today. By the way one of the easiest way to fight global warming is
simply not to drive an SUV (editorial comment here, excuse me).
