There was a Common Loon in pristine alternate (breeding) plumage this morning on Lake Winnemaug in Watertown. We're entering the time of year when attention turns heavily to returning songbirds (warblers, vireos, thrushes etc), but now through about mid-May is also prime time to see Common Loons in the best plumage on inland waters in CT. It's especially worth checking in foul weather, when multiple loons are sometimes precipitated on lakes and larger ponds. Sometimes they'll call.

Some examples: Tyler L., Gosehn, 17 May 92 count of 12; Pitch Res, Morris, 10 May 00 count of 10; Swartswood L, Sussex Cty, NJ, 12 May 89 count of 30+
