The brother of my daughter's softball coach has cultivated one of the
strongest Purple Martin colonies that I am aware of in CT. On McClimon Road
in Preston there are approximately 20 pairs (maybe more) of Purple Martins
in what can only be described as a beautifully cultivated colony. The amount
of effort and time he has put into it is truly impressive. His knowledge of
the species is pretty impressive as well. He remarked to me this morning
that this was the first year that nearly all the pairs arrived virtually
simultaneously. The colony consists of 3 free standing poles with gourd type
houses. Not only is the colony very successful, it is quite attractive in my
opinion.
I would very much like to hear about other healthy Purple Martin colonies in
CT to get a better feel for the current state of the species here.
