CT Birders,
The fields I speak of are not being used for tobacco growing. The tobacco
fields that the heron rookery is located near have been dormant from tobacco
growth for a number of years. The pesticide warning sign was posted as an
individual walks into the area of the Great Blue Heron nesting area. This
area last year had Wild Turkey nesting and Great Crested Flycatcher,
Pileated Woodpecker to name a few! Another issue I have been concerned about
for the past 3 years or so is encroachment of this sensitive wildlife area
by off road recreational vehicles.
The pesticide thing was a surprise to me because it looks as thou they may
be using them directly in the area of the nesting herons. The tobacco fields
are vast and have attached fields that encompass a wide variety of wildlife
& habitat that is threatened by off road ATVs, last summer I found a dead
Whip or Will that had been run over by ATVs.
I would be willing to meet anyone at Ebbs Corning in West Suffield and then
we can go look at the site.
