CT Birders,
Today brought a male ruby throat who had no problem coming under the pergola to the feeder under the porch. A returnee? I would like to think so. The last 3 years we have had a male rt hum who was an agrreable chap for a hummer. He would allow other hummingbirds to feed but then chase after them when they were finished.
During rainy weather I could see 3-4 birds on feeders within feet of each other, some doubled up on the same feeder. I only have 3 feeders up about 10 ft from each other. This hummer was also very appreciative of all my gardening efforts, as he would sample and explore every plant I put in, sometimes as I was doing it! :)))
I have had males in the past who would take other males to the ground in fights and would not let any other male in the yard. Just real brutes. And some hums are plant particular and don't sample all the offerings.
Hope this is the same bird of the last few years, time will tell.
As far as food goes there is plenty of it with all the insect activity by the pond. Winter honeysuckle, quince, cherry , and crapapples are blooming along with service berry and korean spice viburnum. Plus I already have flowering ivy leaf geraniums, fucshias, bouganvilla, queen of the nile, jasmine, and abutilon, all plants I wintered over, The cuttings still need to get potted up. Looks like I will be taking it all down and covering again tonight!
Oriole and grosbeak kept on going, would like some to arrive and stay!
