Today's yard birds include blue gray gnatcatcher, warbling vireo, gray catbird, and female eastern towhee. I was not able to do too much watching as last night I received my first orphaned baby birds. Wasn't quite ready for the baby season to begin so early!
A clutch of four newly hatched bluebirds arrived late yesterday, keeping me on a 30 minute feeding schedule all day. The female never returned and although the male was present, males do not brood young so they were quite cold and lethargic when the host removed them after watching for the female all day.
Today was also a big day for a very tiny bird. I released the black throated green warbler after outfitting him with a band. He was singing his head off in the flightcage but not a peep after release except for the chips. Big adjustment after SEVEN months in captivity. He was perfectly waterproof and aereobically fit.
So keep your eyes peeled for the most beeeeauuitful bt green ever (not that I am biased) with a slight wing droop and a silver bracelet on his right leg. :))))))) Last seen heading north., I AM going to miss that little guy!
Melissa will be posting some pics of him soon, right before release, on our website.
