242 Species were reported in CT for 2008 AS OF April 30, 2008. It has been a
wild weekend of girl's softball for my daughter and I simply could not get
the YTD list completely updated to today. Tomorrow I hope to finish updating
the list as well as posting the species list. I apologize for this but I
have been insanely busy and it took four hours today to catch-up this far!
Here are the new species added since last I posted, listed in the
chronological order they were posted or sent to me;
Veery. Scott Kruitbosch found a very early individual on 4/14/08 at the
Fairfield CAS Center. Thank you Scott for Veery-fying the identification. Oh
I do apologize but my weekend has been insane and I couldn't resist.
Black-and-white Warbler. I had 2 in Nehantic State Forest in Lyme on
4/16/08.
Semipalmated Plover. Jim Bair had 1 on 4/16/08 at Milford Point.
Cliff Swallow. Maria Stockmal spotted one along the Naugatuck River walk on
4/17/08 in Derby.
Ruff. Frank Mantlik found one on 4/18/08 at Grace Salmon Park in Westport.
Well done Frank. This bird has been very cooperative for birders to date.
Grasshopper Sparrow. Mike and Wanda Moccio found 1 on 4/19/08 at Cove Island
Wildlife Sanctuary in Stamford.
Harlequin Duck. A female was discovered by Tom Baptist on 4/19/08 at
Greenwich Point Park. Another nice find, well done Tom.
Worm-eating Warbler. I had one on 4/19/08 in Nehantic State Forest Lyme.
Least Sandpiper. Frank Mantlik found one on 4/19/08 at Grace Salmon Park in
Westport.
Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Pam Holden had a male at her feeder on 4/20/08 in
Colchester. David Babington also had a male at his feeder in Washington on
4/20/08 as well. A beautiful bird with a truly beautiful song.
Solitary Sandpiper. Paul Cianfaglione spotted 1 on 4/21/08 in South Windsor.
Green Heron. Paul Cianfaglione spotted 1 on 4/21/08 in South Windsor.
Scarlet Tanager. Glenn Williams tallied the years first with 1 male in
Mystic on 4/21/08.
Whippoorwill. Jack Swatt reports the first in Wolcott on 4/22/08. This
species (one of my favorite CT birds) returns earlier than most birders
realize, when the weather can be still quite cool and wet.
Eastern Kingbird. Frank Mantlick found one in Westport on 4/22/08.
Bank Swallow. Bill Banks submitted the first report with 5 at Beacon Falls
on 4/22/08.
Orchard Oriole. Paul Cianfaglione spotted a male on 4/23/08 in Wethersfield.
A cracking little bird if you ask me.
Wood Thrush. Tammy Eustis had one in her yard in Chester on 4/23/08.
Upland Sandpiper. Rollin S. Tebbetts found 2 in Windsor Locks, at the
traditional spot of Bradley International Airport. One day earlier than last
year.
Yellow-throated Vireo. David Babington had one in Washington on 4/25/08.
American Redstart. David Babington had one in Washington on 4/25/08.
Warbling Vireo. Penny Solum had 1 in New Britain on 4/24/08.
Black-throated Green Warbler. Patrick Comins got the first on 4/25/08 in
Southbury.
Ovenbird. Tammy Eustis tallies the first on 4/26/08 in Chester.
Least Flycatcher. Paul Carrier had 1 in Harwinton on 4/26/08.
Prairie Warbler. Lorraine Amalavage and Terry Weaver reported 1 via Dave
Rosgen from Litchfield on 4/25/08.
Yellow-throated Warbler. Bob Dewire discovered a male in Voluntown in
Pachaug State Forest on 4/26/08. An excellent find by an excellent birder.
Good job Bob.
White-rumped Sandpiper. Tim Antanaitis found 1 on 4/26/08 in Madison. A nice
bird for Spring and very early at that. Well done Tim.
Great Crested Flycatcher. Frank Mantlik tallies the first on 4/27/08 in
Startford.
King Rail. Paul Desjardins first heard 1 in South Windsor then Tim
Antanaitis actually saw it and photographed it later on 4/27/08.
That's it for now. There have been quite a few new species for 2008 seen so
far in May and I will tell you about them tomorrow. Remember that I am
keeping a list of "reported" species. Some of you may well have seen a
particular species earlier than the listed individuals but if you didn't
post it, I didn't know about it!
