Another good woodpecker afternoon: after remaining oddly secretive since their mating frenzy on 4/23, 3 sapsuckers appeared late in the day today in the same oak tree. I photographed a male and a female but never got all 3 together so I don't know what sex the third one was. No obvious mating activity, just their typical hide and seek, chasing behavior. Right before that the male pileated let us see him for about 15 minutes as he dug things out of ash trees on the edge of the yard. They've nested here for the last 5 years but are often illusive (except when they get vocal).

We put out some oranges for the birds and today the orioles and grosbeaks went crazy for them---the only good thing about the often lousy fruit from the supermarket.
