Mike is/was right on! Today TWO Mississippi Kites were seen at the
Pilgrim Heights Hawk Watch on Cape Cod.

Last year, on 26 May, FOUR Mississippi Kites were tallied at the
Pilgrim Heights Hawk Watch. Then birders had the one at Greenwich the
very next day.

Kites become "overshoots" as early as mid April and as late as early October (B. Wheeler, Raptors of Eastern North America, p.106). Last year on May 27, an adult Mississippi Kite was seen in Greenwich, approximately 7 miles inland and flew away to the northeast headed further inland. On May 2 of this year, just a few days ago, a Swallow Tailed Kite was seen at Sandy Hook hawkwatch in upper New Jersey (Hawkcount), about 35 miles from the Connecticut shore. The weather for last year's Greenwich Kite was exactly like today's - very warm temps and a dull listless wind with no sustained direction. Looking for Kites takes less time than it does to check yourself for ticks after an outing! Not only would Dave P. love to add another species to his growing list, I'm hoping one or more of the 450 subscribers to this forum will help add to the knowledge base of Kite movement through our state.
