 From Steve Broker (Cheshire):
1/5/09 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park, West Beach pines (12:25 -
12:30 P.M.) -- 20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS (a mix of adult females and
1st year males with several adult males). Six hop and skip foraging
bouts in five minutes, with steady progression westward. At 12:25,
the flock flew in and landed on one of the single pines toward the
beach, east of the walkway. Stop 2, a pine in the grove east of the
walkway. Stop 3, a pine in the grove west of the walkway, closer to
parking lot. Stop 4, a pine further west and closer to beach. Stop
5, to the grove's pine furthest to the west. Then, flight over the
marsh and stop 6 in a single pine on elevated land out in the marsh.
Departure to the west and out of sight at 12:30 P.M.. Lunch on the fly!
