I've been checking the lower Housatonic River from various Stratford locations, and from Milford Point today. Shorebird and tern numbers are sizeable, and warrant close scrutiny for rarities. Here's a summary of highlights:
7/30 Milford Point 5pm - 1900 Semipalmated sand., 3 Least sand., 12 Black-bellied plover, 30 Semipalmated plover, 1 Piping plover, 2 Am. Oystercatcher, 20 Sanderling, 3 Short-billed dowitcher. Also 200+ Common Terns, mostly out on distant breakwater. I left in short order as Frank Gallo called with news that he'd found a White-faced Ibis at nearby Silver Sands SP.
7/29 Stratford, Short Beach - 4:45pm - 1 Peregrine Falcon (on Milford Point nesting bar), 1000+ Semipalmated sandpiper, 30 Sanderling, 10 Ruddy Turnstone, 2 Am. Oystercatcher, 14 Short-billed dowitcher, 68 Laughing gull, 160 Ring-billed gull, 50 Herring gull, 300 Common Tern, 1 Indigo Bunting (colorful male atop bare trees behind tennis courts).
7/28 Stratford, Stratford Marina, 4:45pm, with Seth Harvey - At high tide, 1 probable LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER among many Greater Yellowlegs and Short-billed Dowitchers roosting on old pilings.
7/27 Stratford Point 12:00 - 5 species of swallows: Barn, Tree, Northern Rough-winged, Bank, and 1 Cliff
