9/7/09 - Great Pond, Simsbury, 4:30 - 5:15 p.m. - 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 7 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS

Another interesting observation was the amount of Green Herons. I counted at least 15 but there was probably more than that. Although the best sighting of the day was a mother River Otter and her kit (who was about 3/4 of her size) wrestling with a snapping turtle! The snapping turtle had a carapace of 10-12 inches. The mother otter would pull the snapper onto a weed mass by the tail and attempt to grab it by the head ~ although after several attempts and several nips by the snapper both species called it a draw and went their separate ways.
