On Friday I was at Cape May point in New Jersey. I noticed a posting there that said 90 % of the hawks that fly over Cape May are immature. Why is that and where do the adult hawks go?

Incidentally, on Friday it was a spectacular day for migrants along the red trail. I saw nothing rare, but I did see fifteen species of warbler.
