Dave Provencher hit the nail on the head regarding bird movement
following the cold and snowy weather. Raptors appear to be a part of
this movement with a few species now around that were absent on CBCs
only one week ago.

Milford Pt early afternoon - SHORT-EARED OWL (found on driftwood well
into marsh, looking around very alertly...a hunter then fired off a
few shots at nearby geese which made the owl take flight and head
toward Stratford), ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (light morph bird hovering over
the point at first, later seen hunting the eastern end of the marsh),
adult ICELAND GULL on the sandbars, 2 "Ipswich" SAVANNAH SPARROWS

New Haven, Edgewood Park evening - 43 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, 3 COMMON
GRACKLES, many RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS. For the January listers, the
Rusties were seen on both sides of the West River...not along the
river itself, but among swampy thickets on either side of the river
(along the white trails). Fantastic looks...probably my best ever of
the species. The grackles and Red-wings came in around 4pm on the west
side of the river.
