1/19 Stonington - Quiambaug Cove around Wilcox Road, Rte 1 bridge, 12:30 -1:00PM - Barrow's Goldeneye (1M and 1F), Hooded Merganser (F), all three hanging around the channel under the bridge. The cove sluices out the bottom there to a depth of 10-12 ft, and diving ducks often congregate there rather than the shallower parts of the cove. Flock of 20+ Mallards, with two domestic Mallards (white peking and black-and-white, from the 'hood)
Backyard feeder just off the Cove - Downy Woodpeckers (2M, 1F), Goldfinches (5, M&F), Northern Flicker (M), Northern Cardinals (3M, 2F) a mix of tan striped White-throated and Seaside Sparrows feeding off the ground. Common grackles (15-20, M&F). The Tan-striped White-throated Sparrows where longer and huskier than the Seasides, but the bill lengths on the Seasides where comparatively longer (overall length longer than the distance between the eyes and the base of the bill). Helped to see both species together!
