[CT Birds] decapitated Heron

Carol,

 

My first guess would be Great Horned Owl. They are known to decapitate other
raptors if they are too near their nest sites. I have seen (in years past)
Great Horned Owls hunting in daylight right along the causeway at Barn
Island, a little later in the year than this when they were feeding large
owlets. They are nesting now and the Great Blue Heron may have just been in
the wrong place at the wrong time.
