Southport Survey # 219
The sky started out as overcast with a spritz of rain, but gradually
cleared to cloudy. Initially the water was rippled with no wind. but
by the end a NE breeze formed and the ripples increased. Off shore
there were ducks about but no large numbers. The White-winged Scoters
continued to be about, and the only different ducks were two groups
of Scaup on the fly by. The Common Loons have returned but only one
Red-throated off shore The others were in Southport Harbor. There was
also a fair number of Horned Grebes about. Over the years I noticed
that Bridgeport is sort of the low point in terms of Loon
distribution. They increase as you go west to Norwalk Islands and
Increase going east and you head towards New Haven Harbor.

The golf course ponds and Southport Harbor were finally open and
contained Mallards and Geese. At Southport and BHB (Burying Hill
Beach) there were few gulls and the only ducks at the mouth of the
creek were the wigeon. Gadwall wall were absent from both areas.
