Southport Survey # 221
The water was flat and the sky clear. Off shore Long-tailed Ducks
were scattered in groups of 10 to 20 all the way into Westport. The
biggest flock of gulls was a group of 150 Herring Gulls flying east
the first thing. There were a couple of small patches of birds
feeding on the barnacle larvae. There was one small cluster of Ring-
billed gulls and a couple of mixed flocks of Brant, Black Duck,
Mallard, and Wigeon. Overall the gulls were scarce with whole beaches
with no gulls on them. The Horned Grebe were closer to shore in
groups of 5 to 10 birds scattered into Westport. Red-breasted
Mergansers were in groups of 10’s cruising along the shore.

The golf course ponds contained most of the swans. There is one im.
bird that keeps getting pushed around by the two pair. There were 2
Killdeer on one of the greens. At Southport Beach at the mouth of
Sasco Creek again had the ducks that had finished feeding off shore,
and all the Buffleheads. The 2 Green-winged Teal were new for the
season.

At Burying Hill Beach off shore was more of the same except for a
flock of Green-winged Teal that flew to the mouth of the creek.
Sunken Island to Sherwood Island totaled 161 Horned Grebe and 340
Long-tailed Duck
