Sunday, March 21, 7:15 - 8 pm; CT Audubon H. Smith Richardson Tree Farm, Westport - several American Woodcock peenting and displaying from all directions. There were two in the immediate area, enabling excellent views of ground-strutting performances and courtship flights, so close that they came in for landings from right overhead. The show began just before dusk with peenting heard from adjacent forest areas and displaying in full swing by 7:30, continuing through the 8 o'clock hour when it was too dark to see. They were still being heard upon departure at 8:10.
The tree farm is located on Sasco Creek Rd approximately 0.1 mile from its intersection with Greens Farm Rd, a bit noisy from the roar of I-95 traffic, but not so much to interfere with the ability to locate and observe these birds; highly recommended and worth the trip. Thanks to Tina for her report last week and directions provided yesterday.
Also, in the company of a few very active and vocal Black-capped Chickadees were two Golden-crowned Kinglets and one Ruby-crowned Kinglet.
