Dear CT Birders:
Please see the below message from the Highlands Coalition regarding an important opportunity to increase federal funding to protect critical bird habitat. Additional alerts are soon to follow in the next week or so specific to the Conte Refuge and the Connecticut River, but this aspect of the overall funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund is an opportunity to protect habitat throughout the country.

This fund was set up as a compromise too allow expanded offshore drilling and the intent was to utilize some of the proceeds from the drilling to protect critical onshore habitat. The Land and Water Conservation Fund has never been fully funded as intended.

Both Senators have been strong supporters of the Land and Water Conservation Fund in the past and we hope that they will consider becoming co-sponsors of this important legislation. S. 2747, the Land and Water Conservation Authorization Funding Act of 2009.

Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Patrick Comins, President COA

Your help is needed TODAY to help gain co-sponsors for S. 2747, the Land and Water Conservation Authorization Funding Act of 2009. This bill was introduced last year by Senators Bingaman and Baucus and will fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund, authorized at $900 million annually. These funds can be used for federal and state land acquisition and planning. With finances tight at the state level these funds are needed now more than ever.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund provides much needed funding to federal, state and local projects in Connecticut. It also provides funds to the Highlands Conservation Act. To see a copy of the legislation and to download fact sheets about the bill visit: http://www.outdoors.org/conservation/landprotection/lwcf-full-funding.cfm.

Please take these actions today!

1) Ask Senator Dodd to become a co-sponsor of S.2747. Please contact David Kronig in the Senator's office at david_kronig at dodd.senate.gov or 202-224-2823.

2) Ask Senator Lieberman to become a co-sponsor of S.2747. Please contact Danielle Rosengarten in the Senator's office at danielle_rosengarten at lieberman.senate.gov or 202-224-4041.

3) Sign on to a letter asking both Senator's to co-sponsor the bill. Attached and below is the letter.

Thanks so much for your help and for all you do! Please also forward this onto others that think may be interested.

Best,
