5/5 10AM-12PM Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center, Milford
low tide receding 70-80, sunny.
The female osprey was on the nest at 10AM; the male returned to the perch
at 10:20AM; then at 10:55AM there was a changing of the guard and the male
sat on the eggs while the female flew around and rested on the perch. It's
interesting that one can observe how the ospreys "ball up their claws" when
handling and sitting near the eggs . At 11:20AM the female returned to the
eggs while the male rested on the perch. A third osprey was observed flying
over. This year has also seen several blue objects brought to the nest.
There was a blue piece of plastic at first, and now one can observe a blue
flipflop on the nest.
Other birds and shorebirds observed include
4 Great Egrets and 3 Snowy egrets (in beautiful plumage) ,mallards, Black
ducks, Greater & lesser yellowlegs, a least tern flyover, semipalmated
plovers, 6 D.C. cormorants, sanderlings black bellied plovers, 10 mute swans
and some other peeps that I had trouble identifying (possibly semi palm.
sandpipers or least sandpipers)
On the grounds were 3 purple martins -one in the nest box, and a male &
female flying around-house sparrows invading the nest
box, robins, common grackles, R.W. Blackbirds, house sparrows, mourning
doves, cardinals, song sparrow and Frank heard an Orchard oriole.
