5/12 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 11AM-1PM
high tide, receding, 50, rainy
at 11AM the female osprey was sitting on her eggs, hunkered down flat on
them, her head & neck horizontal on the nest. At 11:25AM the male brought a
branch to the nest and did some housekeeping while the female did some egg
shuffling and wing flapping. There is a blue "plank" of some sort on the
nest now. There are several "stray" ospreys in the area which seem to
annoy the female. At 12:45PM the male returns to the nest with no fish, but
sits on the 4 eggs, while the female flies around the marsh. She returned
to the nest at 12:45PM with a red plastic bag which promptly blew away.
Other birds seem included 56 Brant, and 1 Willet and 2 Semi-palmated
sandpipers once the tide began to recede. There were 4 mallards (2 m, 2 F) on
the marsh,
one busily diving D.C. Cormorant, 16 mute swans, 5 Great Egrets and many
tree swallows. There were mourning doves, cardinals, house sparrows, Red
winged blackbirds, common grackles, a mockingbird, robins, a Common
Yellowthroat and blue jays.
