>From The Audubon Society of North American Birds, John K Terres ;  Feeds much on abundant rabbits in So Tex, also eats cotton rats, snakes, lizards, frogs, grasshoppers, cicadas, beetles, occasionally a quail or other birds and carrion: may be attracted from ten miles away to column of smoke rising from grass fire where large numbers of these hawks may gather to prey on rats, rabbits and other animals fleeing from fire.
