Southport Survey # 238

The tide was high and the water calm. Sky was clear with little wind.
Off shore there was one bit of activity. First I spotted a couple of
Herring Gulls sitting on the water dipping their bills, then a couple
of cormorants popped up. Shortly, the Common Terns stopped in their
traveling to do a little fishing. Otherwise there was the odd
Laughing Gull out on the water. A couple of Killdeer were calling at
the golf course. They probably nest there but considering the amount
of habitat and the limited view, they are not always seen. Most of
the Ring-billed Gulls were resting on Sasco Beach, quite an increase.
The lack of Mallards was unexpected..

At Southport Beach a flock of 500 Tree Swallows flew in off the
water. Since they were in a direct flight, not the swirling ones that
are impossible to count, the count was rather accurate.
