>From Gina Nichol & Sunrise Birding Winter Solstice Walk:
12/21/2010 -- Madison, Hammonasset State Park (Meig's Point area) --
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 3 RAZORBILLS, 15+ PURPLE SANDPIPERS, COMMON EIDER (drake).

Ten very hardy birders braved the cold and wind at Hammonasset this morning
to celebrate the Winter Solstice. We were rewarded with excellent views
of numerous Purple Sandpipers very close as the high tide pushed them up
onto the rocks and beach. Before most people arrived, Don Morgan saw a
raptor which he identified as a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. The highlights of the walk
were 3 RAZORBILL (flybys moving south and west in the sound), 15+ PURPLE
SANDPIPERS, COMMON EIDER (drake).

Other sightings included: Canada Goose, American Black Duck, Common
Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser, Red-throated Loon, Common Loon, Horned Grebe,
Turkey Vulture, Northern Harrier, Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling, Dunlin,
Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Great Black-backed Gull, Rock Pigeon, Mourning
Dove, Horned Lark, Northern Cardinal, House Finch.

Denise Jernigan saw an Eastern Meadowlark crossing the marsh heading toward
 the Cedar Island Trail.

Happy Winter :! to all and best wishes for a healthy, prosperous, and
birdy new year!
