A day of post-storm birding today 10/30/11 in Stratford, with highlights of 2
N. Pintail, migrating Turkey Vultures (135 in 65 minutes), 2 Peregrines, 25 RED
KNOTS, 4 Bonaparte's Gulls, 1 probable large (Royal?) Tern, 6 Tree Swallows, 10
Hermit Thrush, 1 White-crowned Sparrow, and a late INDIGO BUNTING. Surprisingly
little on or over LI Sound (no Gannets nor sea ducks, and very few gulls).

Comments: Birding the town the day after a strong Nor'easter snowstorm.
Today was clear, chilly 34-44F, NW 10-25mph. Started watching feeder/yard
birds, then out to Community Garden, Wooster Pond, McKinney Refuge, Airport,
Great Medows, Long Beach, Oak Bluff Ave., Seawall, Stratford Pt., Short Beach,
Frash Pond, Greenway & Birdseye Boatramp, Stratford Marina, Boothe Park, Ryder's
Lane, and Beaver Dam Lake.
66 species (+1 other taxa)
Brant 42 12 along Stratford Pt shore, 30 in river from Sniffens Lane.
Canada Goose 175 flocks of 100 and 20 over house, 50 over Garden, 5 over
American Black Duck 60
Mallard 450 400 or so in Raven Park Pond, small flocks elsewhere.
Northern Pintail 2 pair on Wooster Pond
Green-winged Teal 10 Wooster Pond
Ring-necked Duck 1 drake on Warehouse Pond at McKinney NWR; my first of
Bufflehead 4 3 on Frash Pond (FOS), 1 female on River below Rt 1 bridge; my
first of season
Hooded Merganser 1 female on Frash Pond.
Common Loon 6 at various coastal sites
Pied-billed Grebe 1 Warehouse Pond
Double-crested Cormorant 20
Great Egret 2 Great Meadows Marsh near Airport
Black-crowned Night-Heron 1 In trees near Stratford Marina
Turkey Vulture 135 steady stream of migrating birds seen over Boothe Park
Northern Harrier 4 various sites
Sharp-shinned Hawk 7 5 over Boothe Park; others elsewhere
Cooper's Hawk 2 1 migrant over Boothe; 1 in tree at Ryder's Lane.
Red-tailed Hawk 10 about half were migrating over Boothe
American Kestrel 2 1 over Boothe, 1 over Rt 1
Merlin 1 flying past Long Beach
Peregrine Falcon 2 pair of adults over Boothe Park, harassing soaring
Black-bellied Plover 30 Short Beach Park, resting on beach and on rock pile
Greater Yellowlegs 2 Stratford Marina dock at high tide.
Red Knot 25 21 flew south past Stratford Point plus 4 roosting on Short

Sanderling 362 flock of about 360 on beach at Short Beach; 2 at Long Beach.
Dunlin 200 Resting on beach with SAND at Short Beach.
Bonaparte's Gull 4 fighting wind, flying up Housatonic River, seen from
Laughing Gull 6 2 resting at Short Beach, 4 at Birdseye boatramp lot.
