Southport Survey # 277
31 Oct 2011
The tide was near low, Only the rocks of Sunken Island were exposed.
The water was calm with a mist due to cold air over warm water.
Around Sunken Island there were some Black Ducks and the Red-breasted
Merganser. On the island sat the Laughing Gulls and the Ruddy
Turnstones. Eventually the Forster’s Terns came flying by.
Only the main pond in the golf course was free of ice and contained
some Mallards and the Hooded Mergansers. The Canada Geese were up on
the lawn. In Southport Harbor were the Killdeer and herons. and 2
Pied-billed Grebe. This is the first time for two birds.
At Southport Beach the tide was completely low and had the plovers,
Sanderling and Dunlin. The “Leaning Tower” seems to be leaning a
little more, closer to 45°, and the Great Cormorant was not to be
seen. The gulls were scattered on the flats looking for food.
