On this Saturday, The US Coast Guard Academy will be hosting students from the New London Science and Technology Magnet High School to build 200 to 300 Roseate Tern nesting boxes. This is to replace the boxes on the Falkner Island Unit of Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge that were washed away by Tropical Storm Irene. The event will occur at the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, McAllister Hall Power Lab, on Saturday 5 November from 8:00 AM until done -- they anticipate finishing before 4:00 PM.
Please contact me if you might be interested in helping out with this project to conserve Connecticut's only federally endangered bird species, the Roseate Tern. These next boxes are specifically designed to offer hiding places for Roseate Tern chicks to reduce Black-crowned Night-Heron predation. The original boxes were constructed with funding in part from Audubon Connecticut's IBA Small Matching Grants program.
