Southport Survey # 281
22 Nov 2011

I tried to run this survey all weekend but was stymied the the west
winds making white-caps

The tide was high and the water calm. The sky was overcast with a
northeast breeze.

Off shore everything was moving about. Many loons were migrating west
and quite a few were scattered along the shore. A couple of flocks of
Double-crested Cormorants was responsible for the bump in number.
Even Canada Geese were migrating out in the sound. On the water were
the Red-breasted Mergansers and two of the White-winged Scoters.

The golf course was the highlight of the day. The Black-bellied
Plovers were out on the lawns again, this time a lot more. Also of
interest were the Ruddy Turnstones. It was odd seeing them busy
feeding on the green lawns. Also joining the party was the Western
Sandpiper and 3 American Pipit. Then a male Kestrel popped in for a
while giving the shorebirds a start. The other odd thing was the 5
Red-throated Loons in the main pond. They were close together in a
tight little pod.

The harbor had the Buffleheads and little else. At Southport Beach
the Black Ducks were feeding at the mouth of Sasco Creek, while the
Mute Swans were snoozing away. The Great Cormorant was joined by two
new friends on the leaning tower.
