12/23/11 Branford, Linden Avenue-Long Island Sound. This afternoon one probable hen Barrow's Goldeneye seen through scope offshore just beyond the rocky islands, from the end of Linden Avenue. Duck was by itself, so nothing to compare to, but did seem bigger than Common Goldeneye hen seen earlier at Hammonasset. Bill was all yellow, no black, and the head dark brown with a yellow eye. Body appeared dark grey with white visible on folded wing. Head was never extended enough to id any shape other than round. But id Barrow's versus Common mostly relying on the all yellow bill. Checking all the field guides later, the bill would indicate female Barrow's, especially given the month. Anybody had experience of a Common Goldeneye hen in December with all yellow bill?
