[CT Birds] Ice-free Lakes

Here is something to think about.

All summer long lakes are producing fauna and there are few or no
ducks about.
In autumn a variety of ducks (From Mergansers to Wigeon) come along
and harvest the crop of fauna.
Then the lakes freeze over and the birds move on.
If the lakes do not freeze, then the ducks will likely extend their
harvest
Does this change the biota of the lakes?
Will the lakes be less productive next autumn or can they compensate
in summer?
