Southport Survey # 291
24 Jan 2012

The tide was rising, sunken island was covered. There was a west
breeze which produced calm water. The sky was partly cloudy.

There where no White-winged Scoters, just a small group of Common
Goldeneyes. Long-tailed Ducks were flying west in the distance.
Closer towards shore the Loons and Grebes were scattered about. There
were likely more birds out there but all I could see were white speck
in the distance. The Scaup were a flock flying east. The only Great
Black backed Gull was the standard one on the red hazard buoy that
marks Sunken Island.

The golf course ponds were open but only contained the 3 swans and a
couple of Mallards. Most of the Brant were at Sasco Beach with others
flying by to the east. Southport Harbor was open, that was where the
Bufflehead and Hooded Mergansers were. The Canada Geese were fly-by’s
over the area.

At Southport Beach, a flock of 40 Red-breasted Mergansers were
cruising for food and courting. The swans and most of the ducks were
absent from the mouth of Sasco Creek.
