Southport Survey # 294
14 Feb 2012

The tide was falling so the rocks were exposed but the bar covered.
There was a slight breeze resulting in only ripples water. The sky
was overcast.

There were plenty of birds about. Scanning across the sound one saw
many little white flecks. Some were Long-tailed Ducks, some Horned
Grebe, and some Loons. There were some Black Ducks and a group of
White-winged Scoters around the island then there were other Scoters
were way off by Cockoene Is. The Surf Scoters was a group flying
west. Many of the Long-tailed Ducks were in pairs scattered about,
but there were some small groups and two large flocks. The Horned
Grebes were in groups of 4 to 6 birds. The Great Cormorant flew in to
do some fishing with the loons close to the island.

The golf course ponds were open and contained the Gadwall some
Mallards and the Great Blue Heron. On the lawns was most of the Geese
including Baby Huey. At Sasco Beach the flats were exposed and the
gulls were scattered throughout. The flock of Goldeneye seen last
week were gone.

In Southport Harbor the flats were exposed but nothing was on them.
were most of the Canada Geese. There was one Hooded Merganser at the
mouth of the river, by the marina, but the Bufflehead were out in the
bay around the leaning tower.

At Southport Beach, the flats were exposed with gulls and the wigeon
along the outer edge. In with the wigeon and new to the survey was a
Eurasian Wigeon. I presume the bird to be the one from Sherwood Island.
