[CT Birds] Bathing Bittern?

Here is an oddity (or perhaps it isn't): An English newspaper has announced
the coming auction of the "slides" made by a British bird-watcher, William
Percy (a book in 1951). People, animals. and birds seem to have been
Pecy's main subjects as he traveled over the world. The announcement of
the sale, however, emphasizes ornithology interests and the author's
"'extraordinarily revealing' photographs of bitterns, herons and water
rails, including a sequence of a 'bittern eating an eel and cleaning itself
with slime.'" Kind of bittern is here unspecified: I had guessed a South
American location, where Percy did much of his work, but there seem to be
no bitterns in South America. Anyone encountered so assiduously sanitary a
bird in our marshes?
