Southport Survey # 296
26 Feb 2012

The tide was still falling even though the flats around Sunken Island
were well exposed. It created a large area of calm water as opposed
to the white caps off shore. The sky was clear with a Northwest wind.

Because of the white caps there was little off shore. Mainly fly-bys
of the loons and scoters. Around the island there was the Gulls,
Scaup and Common Goldeneye. Closer to shore was the odd Long-tailed
Duck and Horned Grebe.

The golf course ponds contained some Mallards, 2 Swans, 15 Gadwall
and 4 Red-breasted Mergansers. In Southport Harbor the flats exposed
with many geese but not the flock of Baby Huey. The Bufflehead were
way down by the town marina.

Most of the puddle ducks normally at the mouth of Sasco Creek were
around the bend to the west of there. They could only be seen from
Sasco Breach which is a long scope.of about 1.3 miles. Also at Sasco
Beach and Southport Beach were people with unleashed dogs. They kept
the gulls alert and a challenge for me to count.
