[CT Birds] gulls feeding & more

>From the description I think I've seen gulls feeding on plankton a few times but was never close enough to be sure.  I did watch a Greater Black-Winged Gull kill & eat a pidgeon though about five years ago & was shocked at how brutal it was - both were feeding along with a flock of Herring Gulls & pidgeons when it charged out & grabbed the pidgeon's wing in its beak, twisting & pulling it until the wing was useless, it then dragged the pidgeon to the water where it held it under until it drowned, afterwards it was lunch.  Can anyone tell me if this is unusual?

BTW to sum up the week in New Britain since I put my feeders up last Sunday - squirrels!  :(
