Southport Survey # 298
12 Mar 2012

The tide was low and the water calm. The sky was clear. The tide was
exceptionally low with the Southport harbor almost completely mud.

Sunken Island was again covered in mostly Herring Gulls. On the south
side of the island the mixed raft of White-Winged Scoters and Greater
Scaup continue. In the area just off shore were most of the birds.
Long-tailed Ducks, Loons, and Grebes. All along the shore from Sunken
Island to Southport Beach, Brant were scattered about.

The golf course ponds again contained Red-breasted Mergansers and 1
each Greater and Lesser Scaup. What was new was the 24 Gadwall in
there. Southport Harbor was empty except for the 2 Killdeer and a few
Canada Geese and Mallard.

At Southport Beach the tide was well out with many Ring-billed Gulls
out on the flats while few Herring Gulls were bathing and loafing.
Also there were the American Wigeon and the Eurasia Wigeon. The only
other bird of note was a Great Cormorant standing on the cement base
of the leaning tower.
