4/11 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 10AM-1PM
overcast, windy, 50-55, low tide rising.
First, the osprey saga ......FIRST EGG was laid today! At 10AM the female
was sitting on the egg, male was on the ground, patrolling. There is a
bright yellow bag or paper on the nest, as opposed to blue objects of
previous years.
At 10:35AM the male visited the female, she showed him the egg and she was
very careful, balling up her talons as she shifted the egg in place. After
that they copulated and he left. Male would bring in twigs and did some
nest tending. There is a third osprey in the area, which flew over several
times. Both our ospreys were calling and the male took off to chase off
the intruder.
On the marsh : 1 pair of American Wigeons, about 82 Green winged teal, the
pair of Blue winged teal was in with a group of 6 GW teals,
200+ Brant, mallards, Am. black ducks, 1 Cormorant (not sure if DC or
Greater), 1 female Northern Pintail, about 12 Greater yellowlegs (1
yellowlegs had a bill that seemed shorter, but hard to tell), 61 Dunlin
(some with dark bellies) came in (11:40) and were moving around the marsh,
1 Snowy Egret, 3 Great Egrets,5 mute swans.
On the grounds: The first PURPLE MARTIN was on the "apartment ",
mourning doves, cardinals, Red winged blackbirds, Common grackles (didn't
notice any boat tails), Am. robins.
