Southport Survey # 300
11 Apr 2012

The tide was midway falling with the rocks exposed.. The water was
rippled, the sky cloudy.

Sunken Island was again covered in Herring Gulls. The calm water
allowed for distant views. Way to the west were ducks at the limit of
identification. Most were White-winged Scoters and many others were
Long-tailed Ducks. Clusters of Horned Grebes, most in spring plumage,
were scattered about. There was one lone male Greater Scaup just
hanging out. Loons and Red-breasted Mergansers were scattered about.
Also flying about were the Gannet and a few Bonaparte’s Gulls

The golf course ponds and lawns were empty. From Sasco Beach to
Southport Beach the Brant were scattered. There were only a few Ring-
billed gulls mainly hanging out close to the parking lots looking for
handouts. The Ospreys have returned and remarkably have been building
a nest on the leaning tower!

Southport Harbor had a few Mallards, Canada Geese, and on the flats
the Yellowlegs and Great Egrets. At Southport Beach. there was a
small gathering of Bonaparte’s Gulls. But, the migrant ducks were gone.
