Measured by Willets, you could say that Spring reached Maine yesterday
4/26, at Scarborough Marsh, when the first two Willets flew over. These
were the first willets reported in Maine on the internet lists this year.
This completes the first-of-year arrivals of Willets in ALL the East Coast
states. The very rough summary below shows how remarkably early the willets
arrival in Connecticut was!

ME---------+---------+------ 26th of April
NH---------+---------+---- 24th of April
MA---------+------- 17th of April
RI---------+---------+- 21st of April
CT-------- 08th of April!!
NY---------+-------- 18th of April
NJ---------+------- 17th of April
DE----- 05th of April
MD------- 07th of April
VA- 01st of April
Carolinas----- 05th of April

It might be interesting to speculate on why CT willets arrived (were
reported) so early relative to nearby states. Perhaps it is just random
variation in the way willets arrived this year? Or perhaps CT willets are
always earlier (why)? Perhaps CT birders pay relatively more attention to
coastal migration in April than most other states do? Suggestions welcomed.
And will look into this more closely next Spring, to see if this pattern
continues, and to see how useful the various state internet bird lists are
in accurately tracking migration arrivals of a large visible species like

Have a good birding season!
