5/2 Milford, Connecticut Audubon coastal Center, 10AM-1PM, over
cast-rainy, 50-55, high tide receding
At the purple martin condo, were 5 males and 1 female which had very ragged
feathers, in the compartments, with house sparrows filling in the other
entrances. When I left there were about 10 purple martins soaring around
the gourds.
On Long Island sound side, viewed from platform were 17 mute swans on the
bar, 4 Oystercatchers, piping plovers heard, Brant, and a Great Egret. A
visitor reported seeing 2 Semi palmated plovers.
At 10AM the female osprey was on the eggs and male on perch. At 11AM male
brought in grasses & branches & they changed the guard & 11:30AM another
change of guard and female brought in a long (about 4')salmon colored
ribbony thing (looked like police caution tape) with print on it. The male
& female pulled it onto the nest, constantly arranging it. As the female
settled onto the eggs she managed to weave the ribbony piece around
herself, encircling the eggs and her body.
At 12:30Pm a third osprey actually landed on the nest (maybe for 1 second).
The female squawked-spread her wings, & the male took chase of this third
osprey. He did not relent, chasing the third osprey like in an aerial
dogfight, banking and turning until he chased it clear across the marsh.
On the marsh were 2 rafts of mixed shorebirds- many Yellow legs, some
dunlin and some "peeps" too far out to tell; about 40 Brant, mallards, 2
Snowy egrets, D.C. Cormorants and some tree swallows flying over.
Other birds on the grounds were
Robins, common grackles, mourning doves, 2 song sparrows, 1 with a silver
band on its leg, starlings & cardinals.
