5/30 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center,
10AM-12:30PM, overcast, 73F, high tide receding
At 10AM both ospreys were on the nest with 3 chicks. Hatched 5/21, 5/23,
5/25. Last chick is really small compared to older ones. The male has been
wrestling with a branch that is hanging vertically from the camera. At
11:40AM the male flew off, returning at 11:50AM with a flounder which he
gave to the female. She wrestled with it , eating it and then began
feeding the two larger chicks. the third smaller chick got a morsel, but
majority of feeding was to 2 larger chicks, while the third chick just lay
On the marsh, by mouth of Housatonic were about 10 cormorants (too far to
see what kind), 23 mute swans, 3 Great egrets; closer in marsh were
mallards, 1 Great egret flyover, 8 Snowy egrets . At 11:35AM as tide
receded about 150+ semipalmated sandpipers flew in (with other peeps
possibly in flock.)
On grounds were common grackles, mourning doves, house sparrows,
mockingbirds, starlings, redwinged blackbirds, robins and about 11 Purple
martins at condo, flying around.
