[CT Birds] Outer Island Family Birding Day this Saturday

There are still 8 spaces left for this Saturday's Family Birding Day at the Outer Island Unit of Stewart B. McKinney NWR.  The agenda for the day is presented  below (apologies if there are formatting issues).  Anyone who is interested could contact Shaun Roche at the McKinney Refuge by Friday morning:

Outer Island Family Birding Day Agenda
Hosted By the Friends of Outer Island & SBMNWR Staff
Saturday, July 14th from 8AM-11AM

7:30-7:50 AM    Arrive at the dock and prepare for the voyage

7:50-8:20 AM    Board the Sea Mist with Captain Mike Infantino and Travel to                             Outer Island

8:20-8:35 AM    Introduction to Stewart B. McKinney NWR, Outer       Island, and                                the National Wildlife Refuge System (S. Roche, Park Ranger -                             SBMNWR)

8:35-9:05 AM    Participate in discussion and activities related to why wildlife &                  birds are important, what struggles they face, and what we                               can do to help and learn about them (Kris Vagos, Wildlife                                 Biologist - SBMNWR)

9:05-10 AM               Group will be divided in half and work on each of                                    the following activities for ~ 1/2 hour then switch:

*         Bird Identification, Intro to "Birds of Outer Island" - bi-fold, use of bird guide books and 'How to bird" Tips (Nancy Morand and Deb Verrillo- Friends of Outer Island)

*         Use of binoculars and scopes (Ginny Baltay and Jim Lockhart) Friends of Outer Island) "I Spy" game for familiarity with scopes; observe cormorants on rocks

10-10:50 AM     Small Group Activities (25 min. each)

*         Island tour with emphasis on where birds nest and eat,, bird watching to find evidence of birds feeding, seining with a large net the beach (Staff)

*         "digiscoping" with photo printing in small groups (Ginny and Jim)

10:50 - 11AM   Wrap-up

11AM - 12PM   Picnic /Take Water Taxi back to Stony Creek
