 7/30 Sandy Point, West Haven

Adult BAIRD'S SANDPIPER - seen on the rising tide, roosting and feeding at close
range on the northern spit (Morse Point) at c. 7pm whereby it flew across to the
tern nesting spit.
Adults are incredibly scarce (as are adult Buff-breasted Sandpipers) in late
summer/early fall on the east coast and is a plumage that not many people see.
Unlike juveniles, adults take the central flyway and avoid coastal areas. This
is only the second "fall" adult i have ever seen, the first coincidentally being
at Sandy Point on 16th July 2009. Of course i didn't bring a camera!

Subsequently seen by Jim Dugan and Mark Aaronson and was also independently seen
earlier by Frank Mantlik.
