A basic plumaged Sandwich Tern was very briefly at Short Beach in Stratford
on Sunday, August 26.
The bird was standing at the far end of a sandbar which was closest to the
Housatonic River mouth, just beyond a large group of Common Terns. It was
approximately noon when the bird was spotted.

The terns, including the Sandwich, were quickly spooked into the air by
someting and when they reassembled the Sandwich couldn't be relocated. As
the tide dropped the sandbars were getting covered by people who were
wading out there The average length of stay of such terns in our area can
usually be measured in minutes. A very poor photo was obtained and the call
was heard about 10 minutes before the bird was actually seen.
