9/5 Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center 10AM-1PM
low tide rising, 80F , intermittent heavy rain, thunder, lightning,
At 10AM one Juvenile osprey was on perch with a white feather sticking out
of its right wing by shoulder. It stayed on the perch , much of morning
-sleeping and preening. By
11:30 or so, the loose white feather was straightened out and at 11:45 the
osprey flew off, returning to the nest at 12:30PM, but no fish.
On the marsh were 11 Snowy Egrets, 2 Great egrets- foraging on mud flats,
17 American Black ducks, 2 light/medium brown ducks which were either
mallards moulting or perhaps mallard/black duck cross.
They stayed together as a pair .
2 Yellow Crowned night herons- 1 juvenile & 1 adult. The juvenile Yellow
crowned night heron was foraging, then flew to the mud flat to join the
adult YC Night heron. The juvenile caught a fiddler crab which it was
eating as the Adult watched. 1 Great Blue heron, 15 "peeps"-too far out to
tell what kind in the rain, 6 D.C. cormorants, 1 Herring gull eating a
crab, 2 Yellowlegs-I think Lesser, but not sure, 2 Semipalmated Plovers, 4
At 10:40AM a Peregrine falcon flew over the marsh.
Also on grounds were 2 Cardinals,
2 Catbirds and a mourning dove.
