Birding and Outdoor Education for Teachers

FYI, there is a free teach-the-teacher program being given at Hammonasset State Park on Saturday, October 27th from 10:00 - 12:30, designed to help educators of grades 3-8 incorporate more environmental activities into the classroom. The focus will be on practical methods and activities involving birds, ecosystems, and science/math in the outdoors. Lesson plans will be shared that incorporate journaling, observation skills, inquiry skills, and art connections. STEM interconnections will be emphasized. Materials will be drawn from the leader's experience this past summer at the National Audubon Hog Island educator's week in Maine, plus years of classroom experience. The program is sponsored by the Hartford Audubon Society. The leader is Sarah Faulkner, a science teacher at Sedgwick Middle School in West Hartford. The program is limited to 12 participants. Contact the leader at sffaulkner at comcast.net or Sarah_Faulkner at whps.org, or call 860-693-8540.

Please feel free to forward this message to appropriate educators.

If you want to build a ship, don't herd people together to collect wood and don't assign them
tasks and work but rather, teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea."
